Freewheeling interviews with contemporary artists about their processes and inspirations.
Podcast hosted by artist Jennifer Sullivan.
.

Jonathan Allmaier is a painter who lives in the Bronx. We talk about the work in his solo show The Howling Wind at James Fuentes Essex (on view through May 2, 2021). We also talk about the writing he does about his process, paintings as personhood, being a student of your work, starting over after moving to NYC, seeing the painting as a space or an object, dissolving the mind-body problem, Pearl Blauvelt, experiencing time through color, the influence of baseball and fatherhood, using the form of painting and altered objects/images as forms of painting, making versus showing, inanimate objects are people too, painting with and without a brush, the stubbornness of being an artist, Paul Thek, and including the space between the paintings.

JONATHAN ALLMAIER

The Howling Wind

April 9 – May 2, 2021

JAMES FUENTES ESSEX
Wed–Sun, 10am–6pm
81 Essex St, New York, NY

James Fuentes is pleased to present The Howling Wind, an exhibition of recent paintings by Jonathan Allmaier at James Fuentes Essex. This exhibition will be Allmaier’s third solo presentation at the gallery.

Allmaier writes:

“All I can do is try to recognize, and then follow, the personhood of each painting—the fact that, like other persons, a painting is at once an object in the world and a subject apprehending the world.

This personhood implies irreducible complexity—as it does for us all. Like any other person, a painting is at the same time distinct from the surrounding world and an extension of that world. Paintings are at once necessarily always the same (owing to the strong form of “painting”—which is also a physical model of the way we see the world—we know what it is to be a painting; that is, a painting is an idea) and necessarily always different (a painting is a contingent physical circumstance; that is, a painting is a body). But a painting does not offer a solution to the mind-body problem so much as it shows us the undermining of this distinction. This is why we need paintings. We need them to live.”

Allmaier’s radical commitment to this personhood, which implies a concomitantly radical commitment to learning, has led his practice to include writing (Which World, an ongoing cycle of essays, was first published by James Fuentes in 2014, with a second edition forthcoming) and broadly-defined painting (not necessarily involving paint or canvas), some examples of which will be included in this exhibition.

James Fuentes Essex is a temporary off-site exhibition series held at 81 Essex St.

Opening Reception: Friday, June 12, 6-9 pm

.

Ortega y Gasset Projects

The Old American Can Factory

363 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

.

Inspired by a bi-coastal love affair between Anagnos and another abstract painter, Love Child highlights the dialogue and exchange that takes place when two creative people make something together. The show includes works by Eva and Adele, Anna Gaskell and Douglas Gordon, Nyeema Morgan and Mike Cloud, Rachel Debuque and Justin Plakas, Maria Walker and Jonathan Allmaier, Carrie Moyer and Sheila Pepe, Jennifer Coates and David Humphrey.

“..the complete fusion in a praxis of two subjunctives, two subjunctives that metamorphose into a third; it is from this collusion that a new author emerges, an absent third person, invisible and beyond grasp, decoding the silence.” – from The Third Mind, William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin

Golden Age:

Perspectives on Abstract Painting Today

.

BOOK LAUNCH:

Wednesday, October 8, 7pm at NURTUREart Gallery

56 Bogart Street, Brooklyn, NY

.

Edited by Marco Antonini and Christopher K. Ho and featuring contributions by (in order of appearance):

Marco Antonini, Ariel Dill, Lauren Portada, Stephen Truax, David Geers, Jonathan Allmaier, Vince Contarino, Lane Relyea, Nathlie Provosty, Keith J. Varadi, Christopher K. Ho, Gregory Sholette, David Xu Borgonjon, Keenan Jay and Lauren Martin.

Golden Age features three groundbreaking essays about abstract painting plus newly published postscripts by the authors. Critical texts are interspersed with the voices of the painters themselves, captured by the editors in lively conversations and correspondences.

Golden Age is as much an attempt to summarize existing conversations about the eternal returns of abstract painting as it is an incitement to discuss contemporary art practices (above and beyond specific styles, trends or topics) and how we can further their impact, agency and relevance.

This book was printed thanks to a partial grant from the Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason Foundation.
